Poultry proves to be popular at the Cheshire County Show

Poultry proves to be popular at the Cheshire County ShowJUDGES will crown British poultry champions at next year’s Cheshire County Show, providing another feather in the event.

In previous years birds of all shapes and sizes have attracted attention from the show’s thousands of visitors and now the Poultry Club of Great Britain has awarded the poultry section championship status.

"I think like most secretaries I want my poultry competition to be the best and our team has worked really hard over the last couple years to develop the section at the Cheshire County Show,” said John Tickle, the show’s poultry section secretary.

"I’m delighted that our efforts have now been recognised by the Poultry Club of Great Britain by awarding us championship status and I hope we can now keep up our good work and continue to improve the section each year.”

The competition’s new status marks a remarkable turnaround for the event, which saw the number of entrants dwindle to just over 200 in 2007.

This year more than 600 birds were judged on the condition and colour of their feathers and eyes as well as their size and posture. The section has also welcomed a greater range of breeds from across the country, everything from Gold Dutch Bantams to White Wyandottes.

Over 400 eggs were also shown at the competition, with the colour and shape being closely scrutinised.

The Cheshire County Show poultry section will be one of only 26 championship competitions next year, making it one of the most important in the country.

Ann Bachmet, secretary of the Poultry Club of Great Britain, said: "Gaining championship status is a remarkable achievement by the Cheshire County Show and is testament to the efforts that John Tickle and Nigel Evans have shown to make the poultry section such a success.”

Since taking over the section in 2007, John [pictured] has added 57 new classes and introduced 46 new cups and 12 trophy sections.

He has also tried to do more for younger exhibitors by including a section for poultry and eggs.

Making the section more open and accessible to the general public has also been a major part of its success.

John said: "Getting everyone who comes to the show involved in the section is really important.  We put up breed posters so the public can learn about the different varieties of birds and the coop we set up with a hen and chicks is always really popular, particularly with young children.”

Nigel Evans, executive director of the Cheshire County Show, added: "The poultry section has become one of the most popular features of the Cheshire County Show in recent years with thousands of visitors visiting the marquee.  I would like to congratulate John and all his team on achieving championship status, which will undoubtedly help to enhance the prestige of the Cheshire County Show even further.”
