Cheshire Show Volunteers Receive Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service MORE than 300 volunteers from across Cheshire have been acknowledged with a prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service for their tireless efforts in running the Cheshire County Show. The prestigious National Honour, which is equivalent to the MBE, sets the national benchmark for excellence in volunteering, and the activities of those awarded have been judged at the highest standard. The volunteers with were recognised for donating many hours of time to helping at the two-day show, which is one of the largest events in the North West. Now in its 172nd year, the Cheshire County Show has a long history since being founded in 1838. In 1974 it ceased to function due to financial difficulties and it was obvious to all involved it would only be viable with a huge input from volunteers with an interest in the countryside. Today, many of the original volunteers are still involved in the Show after 32 years, and are pivotal in running, organising and constructing the show, as well as providing educational information about the countryside to 70,000 visitors. Some Cheshire families, many farming families or people with an interest in agricultural and rural affairs, are now in the third generation of volunteers at the Show. The strength of the volunteer base has allowed the Cheshire Show to grow into one of the largest county shows in the UK. |
